Every once in a while, for a treat, a I make my kids white bread. This is a recipe from one of my grandmothers and it is very easy and very yummy. It is light and fluffy and perfect for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (my kids don't like pb & j's with wheat bread).
2 T. yeast
3/4 c. warm water
2 c. warm milk
3 T. sugar
3 T. shortening
1 T. salt
4-8 c. flour
* Note: This recipe is adjusted for a Bosch mixer.
* Pour water and milk in your mixing bowl and add yeast. Let dissolve completely. Add sugar, shortening, salt and 4 cups of the flour. Beat until smooth. Keep adding flour, small amounts at a time, until dough pulls away from sides of the bowl. Let knead for 5 minutes. Place in large, greased bowl and cover. Let raise 1 hour. Punch down, divide into 2 loaves and place in greased bread pans. Let raise again till doubled. Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove from pans and let sit on cooling rack until completely cooled. Slice and enjoy.
